Reflexology

What is reflexology?

Reflexology involves the application of pressure to the reflexes on the hands or feet in order to relax the patient, stimulate the body's healing processes and help maintain a state of balance and well being.

It is a very relaxing therapy working on the mind, body and spirit, and as such, enhances the body's own ability to heal itself.

Reflexology doesn't just treat symptoms: it treats the whole person, bringing relief to a wide range of chronic conditions.

Sheila Elmer RN, RM, BRA is the reflexologist at Healing Thyme.

The history of Reflexology

Reflexology has its roots in ancient history, with cultures from the ancient Chinese to the native American Indians aware of the benefits of applying pressure or massage to the feet and hands. Modern reflexology dates back to the early years of the twentieth century, when an American ear, nose and throat specialist, Dr. William Fitzgerald found that pressure on a specific part of the body would have an effect on a separate, related area. He eventually developed this theory, and divided the body into ten zones, ending in the fingers and toes. He concluded that pressure applied to one part of a zone could affect everything else within that zone. Specific areas on the feet and hands are linked to the areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

This concept was further developed in the 1930's, when physiotherapist Eunice Ingham studied Fitzgerald's Zone Therapy and developed it into what is now known as Foot Reflexology. She related congestion and tension in specific parts of the foot to corresponding parts of the body. For instance, the toes are related to the head, so treating these, affects the head and enables its well being.
